Illustrations had to complement the information provided in the toolkit and not be very jarring . Due to the sensitive nature of the subject being discussed, the illustrations also had to adhere to positive representation of people and situations.

    Deliverables: Cover, Accompanying Illustrations, Report Design

    Style

    Clean lines and pastel shades were used throughout the report as well as the illustrations. Many illustrations also carried quote bubbles with handwritten text to give a human touch to the subject being discussed.

    The cover image also carried a very diverse representation of people who menstruate – this aimed to drive home the idea that menstruators exist beyond the binaries of sex and to complicate the issue of menstrual discrimination as not just one of access and knowledge. View the full report here.

    Brief

    To create simple graphics to illustrate the case study which would compliment the text-heavy document and drive home the message. The client’s demand was to maintain medium detailing and focus on bringing the authentic atmosphere of Hampi and Mamallapuram into the fore by grounding the illustrations in the colours/culture of the land.
    The case study focused on exploring how the existence of parastatal bodies and their rules effected the local populace – loss of livelihood, distance from the decision making process and conversion of living heritage into static heritage, among other things.

    Deliverables: 4 Full Page Illustrations, 1 Cover Illustration and 1 Poster

    Challenge

    Apart from the 10-day deadline, the challenge was to translate context-heavy information into simple illustrations without a lot of dialogues/conversations/captions.

    Style

    I choose to go with a crayon/colour pencil like drawings that looked imperfect to the common user, combined with a watercolour effect to the skies and the background in general, this succeeded in imbibing a stereotypical rural essence to the illustrations. This helped me situate and localise my illustrations, just like the brief demanded.
